The Philippine National Police (PNP) leadership on Monday formally adopted short messaging service (SMS) or popularly known as text messaging as a means of internal communication among leaders in the organization.
Dubbed as the Lead PNP SMS Project, Director General Jesus Verzosa, PNP Chief, explained that it will afford the PNP leadership with a fast and efficient tool to channel requests, information or feedback to concerned PNP offices thus helping improve the institution's responsiveness to community needs.
"An informed leader is an empowered leader. As such, efforts should be made to provide key leaders with essential information, guidance and direction that will help them connect their operational activities with the strategic goals of the PNP," said Verzosa.
Based on the new project, police commanders across the country will be connected to the National Headquarters in Camp Crame on a 24-hour-seven-day a week basis as it is through their cellular phones that they will receive directives and other guidance from the PNP top brass.
“The Lead PNP SMS Project is an expanded application of the existing Office of the Chief PNP SMS Center which is one of the many channels of communication used by the public to ask for police assistance, relay information, or provide feedback on any police action,” explained Verzosa in Monday’s formal launching of the project in Camp Crame.
"It is hoped to complement if not tie some loose ends left by the normal communication infrastructure," he added.
Verzosa explained that the program will be a big boost in its main program, the Integrated Transformation Program which is aimed at instituting reforms and making leaders out of every policemen, regardless of their ranks.
"Developing effective leaders and managers at all levels remains a continuing challenge for the PNP. While several interventions have so far been taken, much has yet to be made to ensure that things are getting done at the police station level," Verzosa said. “With the use of SMS, the project generally aims to increase the knowledge capital of leaders which are essential in helping them effectively lead and manage their respective units or offices."
